It is situated on the Strait of Gibraltar, which is the narrow waterway that separates Europe from Africa, with the African continent being just 14 kilometers (around 9 miles) away across the strait. Due to its strategic location, Tarifa has a rich history of maritime and cultural exchanges.

One of the most notable aspects of Tarifa is its fame as a top destination for windsurfing and kite surfing enthusiasts. The strong and consistent winds in the area, including the famous Levante and Poniente winds, make Tarifa a perfect spot for these water sports. Every year, it attracts windsurfers and kite surfers from around the world.

Tarifa boasts a charming historic old town with narrow cobblestone streets, white-washed buildings, and a Moorish influence in its architecture. Within the old town, you can find historical sites like the Guzmán Castle (Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno), which dates back to the 10th century and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.

It is known for its beautiful beaches, which are not only popular for water sports but also for sunbathing and relaxation. Playa de los Lances and Playa de Valdevaqueros are two of the most renowned beaches in the area.

Due to its proximity to Africa, Tarifa serves as a gateway to Morocco. Ferries depart from Tarifa to Tangier and other Moroccan cities, making it a popular starting point for travellers exploring North Africa.
